Flash Fiction

Far away, in a land isolated and barren, there lived a walrus. But this walrus was different. An outcast to all the others, he was ridiculed for his sense of style. He loved polos, madras shorts, berets and all things tartan. This walrus was not just different in that way however. Thurnice was also terrible at all the games, like hockey, the other walruses loved to play. Thurnice loved to golf. At the local pub one day, while eating a fish stick, he saw a flyer for a golf tournament out of town. Thurnice was ecstatic to finally show off his mad skills. So he decided to take this once in a life time chance and go.
He prepared himself, committing to practicing his golf skills everyday for weeks at a time at the local Peter pans mini put golf course. When it came time for Thurnice to show off his skills , he felt prepared, even though he was going up against the legendary Walrus Woods, Walrus Woods has claimed the past seven trophies for the annual golf tournament. However Thurnice was up for the challenge, he wanted to prove that he was better then Woods. The contest started on March 30, 2012, and so by the start of that day Thurnice was in the hotel unpacking his things. However the hotel room was a little too hot for poor Thurnice, and so the few remaining hours before his competition were spent in the hotel pool.
As Thurnice lounged around in the lukewarm water, he contemplated which polo he would decide to wear that afternoon, when suddenly 'POP' went the floaty he sat on. Now, Thurnice was not a very good swimmer. So as he struggled to stay above the water, the lifeguard ran over 'Baywatch' style, and rescued him just as he drifted out of consciousness. When Thurnice woke up, he felt like Sleeping Beauty. The pretty, young lifeguard stood over him, her lips pressed against his. Though it was only CPR, and she was only trying to save him, shy little Thurnice fell in love. He asked around and came to learn that her name was Walrrissa.
That afternoon was his competition. He struggled on the first two rounds against Woods, but Thurnice managed to break it even on the fifth round. It was towards the end of the competition and Thurnice was down two points so he needed to make his last shot a hole in one to catch Walrrissa's attention. He took the shot, but looking over, his woman was flirting with Woods. Thurnice had won the battle, but lost the war. This walrus could be destroyed but not defeated.

Reflection

...This story that i wrote relates to my quotation on defeat " man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated"- Ernest Hemingway. This story is related to my quotation because Thurnice practiced on his golfing for quite sometime and perfected his techniques so he could be the best golfer out there but in the end Thurnice won the golf tournament but the girl that saved his life and who Thurnice fell in love with was stolen by Walrus Woods, which crushed Thurnice's heart and shows that man can be destroyed but not defeated.
